Definition
The active ingredient is the substance responsible for a product's intended effect. In chlorine-releasing disinfectant tablets such as NaDCC, the active ingredient releases available chlorine when dissolved in water. Other disinfectants use active ingredients such as sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, quaternary ammonium compounds or alcohols.
Why it matters
Two products with the same target concentration can behave very differently depending on their active ingredient—affecting contact time, material compatibility, stability and safety. Knowing the active ingredient is essential for safe substitution and correct dilution.
