Healthcare-Associated Infection (HAI)

healthcare

An infection acquired by a patient during the course of receiving healthcare, not present at admission.

Definition

HAIs include surgical site infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, ventilator-associated pneumonia, and Clostridioides difficile colitis. They extend length of stay, increase mortality, and drive costs.

Why it matters

Environmental disinfection is a foundational HAI-prevention control. Contaminated high-touch surfaces are proven reservoirs for pathogen transmission.

Practical applications

Standardise disinfectant chemistry and concentration across all patient-care areas, and audit compliance with cleaning checklists and ATP swabs.
