Environmental hygiene refers to the systematic cleaning, disinfection, and monitoring of the built environment — floors, walls, high-touch surfaces, equipment, restrooms, and shared spaces — to reduce the microbial burden that can lead to infection or contamination.

The environment acts as a reservoir for pathogens; effective environmental hygiene breaks the chain of infection between surfaces, hands, and susceptible individuals.
