Environmental cleaning refers to the systematic cleaning and disinfection of physical surfaces, equipment, and shared areas within a facility — particularly in healthcare settings such as patient rooms, wards, and clinical support areas. It combines mechanical removal of soil with the use of appropriate disinfectants at correct concentrations and contact times.

Contaminated surfaces are a well-documented route for the spread of healthcare-associated infections. Effective environmental cleaning breaks that chain of transmission and is a foundational element of any infection prevention programme.

Daily and terminal cleaning of patient rooms, decontamination after isolation cases, cleaning of high-touch surfaces (bed rails, door handles, light switches), and preparation of areas between patients.
