No. A passing air-particle test does not mean that an operating theatre is sterile.
Air-particle counting measures the number of physical airborne particles within specified size ranges and compares the results with the applicable criteria for the environment being assessed. It does not identify whether individual particles contain bacteria, fungi or other microorganisms, nor does it directly demonstrate the absence of viable microorganisms.
A passing result therefore indicates that the measured airborne particulate levels met the applicable particle-count criteria under the conditions of the test. It should not be interpreted as proof of sterility.
This distinction is particularly important in operating theatres because environmental control depends on multiple measures working together, which may include ventilation and filtration performance, environmental cleaning and disinfection, appropriate equipment and instrument reprocessing, infection-prevention procedures and required environmental verification.
Particle counting should therefore be understood as one component of controlled-environment verification, not a standalone test of sterility or overall infection safety.
