Definition
Visual inspection is the most common form of hygiene check. It identifies obvious residues, spills or damage. However, a surface that looks clean may still carry invisible organic residues or microorganisms, so visual inspection is best used alongside objective verification methods such as ATP testing.
Why it matters
Visual inspection catches obvious failures quickly and cheaply but should not be treated as proof of cleanliness in hygiene-sensitive environments.
Practical applications
Used at every level of cleaning programmes—from routine housekeeping to pre-production line checks and healthcare environmental rounds.
