Outbreak Response

Outbreak response refers to the intensified hygiene and infection prevention measures activated when two or more linked cases of an infectious disease are identified in a healthcare, aged care, or shared setting. It typically involves enhanced disinfection frequency, isolation procedures, targeted product selection (often chlorine-based), stricter PPE use, and additional staff training and monitoring.

A rapid, structured outbreak response can contain transmission, protect vulnerable populations, and reduce the operational and reputational impact of an outbreak. Delayed or inconsistent response allows pathogens to continue spreading between people and shared surfaces.

Applied in hospitals during norovirus, C. difficile or influenza outbreaks; in aged care during respiratory outbreaks; and in schools, cruise ships and food operations following gastrointestinal illness clusters.
