# Sterilisation

A validated process that eliminates all forms of microbial life, including bacterial spores.

## Definition

Sterilisation is achieved through steam autoclaving, ethylene oxide, gamma radiation, or validated liquid chemical sterilants. It is used for critical medical devices that contact sterile tissue.

## Why it matters

Reprocessing surgical instruments requires sterilisation, not disinfection — the margin for error is zero.

## Practical applications

Follow the device manufacturer's validated reprocessing instructions; disinfectant tablets are for surfaces and non-critical items, not sterilisation.
