# Route of Transmission

processes

The pathway by which a pathogen moves from a source (person, surface, or environment) to a susceptible host.

## Definition

Route of transmission describes how infectious microorganisms travel to cause new infections. Common routes include contact (direct skin-to-skin or via contaminated surfaces), droplet, airborne, vehicle (contaminated food, water, or equipment), and vector-borne. Identifying the dominant route in a setting determines which hygiene interventions are most effective.

## Why it matters

Hygiene programmes only work when they interrupt the actual routes pathogens use in that environment. Focusing on the wrong route (for example, deep floor cleaning when transmission is via hands and high-touch surfaces) wastes effort and leaves real risks in place.

## Practical applications

Guides selection of hand hygiene protocols, PPE, surface disinfection frequency, ventilation requirements, and isolation practices in healthcare, food service, and public facilities.
