# Risk-Based Hygiene

A hygiene approach that matches cleaning and disinfection intensity to the actual infection or contamination risk of each area or surface.

## Definition

Risk-based hygiene is a framework in which cleaning, sanitising and disinfection are prioritised according to the level of harm that contamination could cause in a given environment. Instead of treating every surface the same, teams focus resources on high-risk points (patient care areas, high-touch surfaces, food-contact zones) while applying lighter routine cleaning to low-risk areas.

## Why it matters

Applying disinfectants everywhere increases chemical use, cost, and staff exposure without improving outcomes. A risk-based approach concentrates effort where transmission is most likely, producing better hygiene results with fewer resources.

## Practical applications

Used in hospital environmental services, food manufacturing HACCP programmes, aged care, and facility management to design cleaning schedules and product selection based on risk assessments rather than habit or appearance.
