# Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Equipment worn to protect the wearer from exposure to hazards.

## Definition

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) includes gloves, gowns, aprons, masks, respirators, eye protection, and footwear used to protect workers from exposure to microorganisms, chemicals, and physical hazards during cleaning, disinfection, and clinical care.

## Why it matters

Correct selection, use, and disposal of PPE reduces occupational exposure and prevents PPE itself from becoming a vehicle of cross-contamination.

## Practical applications

Used by healthcare workers, cleaners handling disinfectants, food handlers, and staff managing blood or body-fluid spills.
