# Pathogen

A microorganism capable of causing disease in humans, animals or plants.

## Definition

A pathogen is any biological agent — including bacteria, viruses, fungi, protozoa and prions — that can cause infection or illness in a host. Pathogens vary widely in how they spread, how long they survive on surfaces and how susceptible they are to different disinfectants and contact times.

## Why it matters

Disinfection protocols are designed around the pathogens of concern in a given setting. Understanding which pathogens are relevant helps organisations choose the right disinfectant chemistry, concentration and contact time.

## Practical applications

Healthcare, food production, veterinary care and water treatment settings all target specific pathogen groups when validating cleaning and disinfection programmes.
