# Occupational Hygiene

## Definition

Occupational hygiene (also known as industrial hygiene) is the science of anticipating, recognising, evaluating, and controlling workplace hazards — including chemical, biological, physical, and ergonomic risks — that could harm worker health.

## Why it matters

Protects staff from exposure to disinfectant chemicals, biological agents, dust, and other hazards, supporting compliance with health and safety legislation.

## Practical applications

Applied through risk assessments, exposure monitoring, ventilation controls, PPE selection, and safe chemical handling procedures.
