# Material Compatibility

How well a disinfectant can be used on a surface or material without causing damage over time.

## Definition

Material compatibility describes the extent to which a disinfectant can be applied to a given material — such as stainless steel, plastics, rubber seals, painted surfaces or medical device components — without causing corrosion, discolouration, cracking or degradation of function. It is influenced by the active chemistry, concentration, contact time and frequency of use.

## Why it matters

Using a stronger chlorine concentration than necessary does not improve disinfection but can accelerate damage to equipment and surfaces, increasing lifecycle costs. Matching concentration to the task protects both hygiene outcomes and assets.

## Practical applications

Considered when selecting disinfectants for medical devices, food-processing equipment, kitchen surfaces, vehicles and building interiors, and when writing standard operating procedures for cleaning teams.
