# Isolation Room

A dedicated hospital room used to separate patients with contagious infections from others.

## Definition

An isolation room is a specifically designated patient room designed to contain the spread of infectious agents. It may include controlled ventilation (negative or positive pressure), dedicated equipment, and stricter cleaning protocols. Environmental cleaning inside isolation rooms typically requires higher-strength disinfectants and stricter adherence to contact time.

## Why it matters

Isolation rooms are a primary containment tool for outbreaks and highly transmissible pathogens. Rigorous disinfection between occupancies is essential to prevent onward transmission.

## Practical applications

Housing patients with C. difficile, MRSA, tuberculosis, or novel respiratory viruses, and performing enhanced terminal cleaning between occupants.
