# Infection Prevention and Control (IPC)

The policies and practices used to prevent the transmission of infections in healthcare and other settings.

## Definition

Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is a structured, evidence-based approach to reducing the risk of infection acquisition and transmission. It combines hand hygiene, environmental cleaning and disinfection, sterilisation, personal protective equipment, staff training and surveillance to protect patients, staff and visitors.

## Why it matters

Disinfectant chemistry is only one element of IPC. Consistent preparation, correct contact time and adherence to written protocols determine whether products actually deliver the outcomes they are validated for.

## Practical applications

IPC programmes govern how hospitals, aged-care facilities, clinics, dental practices and laboratories select disinfectants, train staff and audit cleaning performance.
