# Hypochlorous Acid (HOCl)

chemistry

The active antimicrobial agent produced when chlorine-based disinfectants dissolve in water.

## Definition

Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a weak acid formed when chlorine-releasing compounds such as sodium hypochlorite or sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) dissolve in water. It is the primary species responsible for the antimicrobial action of chlorine disinfectants, inactivating bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms by disrupting cellular proteins and metabolic processes.

## Why it matters

The efficacy of a chlorine disinfectant depends on how much HOCl is available at the point of use. Concentration, pH and contact time all influence how effectively HOCl destroys pathogens, which is why controlled dosing and correct dilution are essential.

## Practical applications

Generated in situ whenever chlorine tablets, granules or liquid bleach are diluted for surface disinfection, water treatment, food-contact sanitisation and healthcare cleaning protocols.
