# High-Touch Surface

Surfaces frequently contacted by hands that require more frequent cleaning and disinfection.

## Definition

High-touch surfaces are objects and areas that patients, visitors, and staff touch many times per day — such as bed rails, door handles, light switches, call buttons, IV poles, and bedside tables. Because they accumulate microbial contamination quickly, they require targeted and frequent disinfection.

## Why it matters

Studies consistently link contaminated high-touch surfaces to the transmission of healthcare-associated infections. Prioritising them in cleaning schedules produces the greatest infection-control return on effort.

## Practical applications

Structured cleaning rounds focused on bed rails, over-bed tables, telephones, keyboards, monitors, and toilet flush handles in patient rooms.
