# Hand Hygiene

Cleaning of hands using soap, water, or alcohol-based rubs to remove or destroy microorganisms.

## Definition

Hand hygiene is the practice of decontaminating hands to interrupt the transmission of pathogens between people, surfaces, and equipment. It includes handwashing with soap and water and the use of alcohol-based hand rubs at defined moments of care.

## Why it matters

Hands remain one of the most common routes of disease transmission; consistent hand hygiene is the single most effective measure to prevent healthcare-associated and community infections.

## Practical applications

Used at defined moments in clinical care, before food handling, after using the toilet, and after contact with contaminated surfaces or waste.
