# Cleaning

The physical removal of dirt, organic matter, and contaminants from surfaces.

## Definition

Cleaning is the process of removing visible soil, grease, food residues, blood, and other organic matter from surfaces using water, detergents, and mechanical action. It is distinct from disinfection, which reduces or inactivates microorganisms.

## Why it matters

Organic matter can inactivate disinfectants and shield microorganisms; effective cleaning is therefore a prerequisite for reliable disinfection.

## Practical applications

Performed before disinfection in healthcare, food processing, and commercial cleaning routines, typically following documented cleaning schedules.
