# Chlorine-Releasing Agent

A compound that produces active chlorine when dissolved in water.

## Definition

Chlorine-releasing agents (CRAs) are chemicals that generate hypochlorous acid and related chlorine species when dissolved in water. Common examples include sodium hypochlorite, sodium dichloroisocyanurate (NaDCC) and calcium hypochlorite. They are used to prepare disinfectant solutions with a known available-chlorine concentration.

## Why it matters

Different chlorine-releasing agents offer different trade-offs in stability, storage, portability and ease of dosing. Selecting the right CRA affects how reliably an organisation can prepare disinfectant at the correct strength across sites and shifts.

## Practical applications

Used in healthcare surface disinfection, water treatment, food processing sanitation, emergency response and community water disinfection kits.
