# Air Particle Count

An air particle count measures the number and size of airborne particles within a defined volume of air. In controlled healthcare environments such as operating theatres, particle counting can help assess environmental and ventilation performance against applicable criteria, but it does not identify microorganisms or prove that an environment is sterile.

## Definition

An air particle count is a measurement of airborne particles within specified particle-size ranges and a defined volume of air. A particle counter draws in air and detects particles passing through the instrument. The resulting measurements can be used to assess particulate levels within controlled environments and, where applicable, compare those results with defined environmental requirements or standards.

## Practical applications

Air-particle counting may be used as part of environmental assessment in applications such as: operating theatres; other controlled healthcare environments where specified; ventilation-system assessment; HEPA-filter performance assessment; post-engineering or construction verification; environmental investigations; and other controlled environments governed by applicable requirements or standards. The testing method, sampling locations, operating conditions, particle-size ranges and acceptance criteria should follow the requirements applicable to the environment being assessed.
